Combining machine learning and molecular simulations to predict the stability of amorphous drugs

Amorphous drugs represent an intriguing option to bypass the low solubility of many crystalline formulations of pharmaceuticals. The physical stability of the amorphous phase with respect to the crystal is crucial to bring amorphous formulations into the market—however, predicting the timescale involved with the onset of crystallization a priori is a formidably challenging task.

Solid, powdered samples are often prepared for infrared (IR) spectroscopy analysis in the form of compressed pellets. The intense scattering of incident light by such samples inhibits applications of more advanced IR spectroscopic techniques, such as two-dimensional (2D)-IR spectroscopy.

Singlet fission photovoltaics: Progress and promising pathways

Singlet fission is a form of multiple exciton generation, which occurs in organic chromophores when a high-energy singlet exciton separates into two lower energy triplet excitons, each with approximately half the singlet energy. Since this process is spin-allowed, it can proceed on an ultrafast timescale of less than several picoseconds, outcompeting most other loss mechanisms and reaching quantitative yields approaching 200%.

Studying protein dynamics and conformational heterogeneity is crucial for understanding biomolecular systems and treating disease. Despite the deposition of over 215 000 macromolecular structures in the Protein Data Bank and the advent of AI-based structure prediction tools such as AlphaFold2, RoseTTAFold, and ESMFold, static representations are typically produced, which fail to fully capture macromolecular motion.

The family of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials with strong excitonic effect offers fascinating opportunities for studying excited state exciton behavior at 2D limit. While exciton dynamics in conventional 2D semiconductors (e.g. transition metal dichalcogenides) has been extensively studied, little is known about exciton properties and dynamics in 2D layered semiconductors with strong electron/exciton-phonon coupling.

Crystallographic groups prediction from chemical composition via deep learning

Crystallographic group is an important character to describe the crystal structure, but it is difficult to identify the crystallographic group of crystal when only chemical composition is given. Here, we present a machine-learning method to predict the crystallographic group of crystal structure from its chemical formula. 34528 stable compounds in 230 crystallographic groups are investigated, of which 72% of data set are used as training set, 8% as validation set, and 20% as test set.

Protocol for Structure Determination of Unknowns by EI Mass Spectrometry. III. Diagnostic Ions in Multiple Ring Carbo- and Heterocycles, and Mono-Functional Derivatives

Electron ionization (EI) mass spectra of bi- and poly-ring carbo- and heterocycles including saturated and unsaturated spiranes, condensed ring and bridged ring systems are examined. Three, four, five, six-membered and larger rings are considered. The rings may include oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, selenium or phosphorus atom or multiple hetero atoms.

Experimental and Semiclassical Stark Widths and Shifts for Spectral Lines of Neutral and Ionized Atoms (A Critical Review of Experimental and Semiclassical Data for the Period 2008 Through 2020)

This Review Article compares new experimental and corresponding semiclassical Stark broadened data for non-hydrogenic spectral lines of neutral atoms and positive ions. This Review covers the period 2008 until the end of 2020 and presents the continuation of previous critical reviews from 1976 (two), 1984 (two), 1990, 2002, and one from 2009.
