Open hardware solutions in quantum technology

Quantum technologies, such as communication, computing, and sensing, offer vast opportunities for advanced research and development. While an open-source ethos currently exists within some quantum technologies, especially in quantum computer programming, we argue that there are additional advantages in developing open quantum hardware (OQH).

Microstructured optical fibers for quantum applications: Perspective

Recent progress in the development and applications of microstructured optical fibers for quantum technologies is summarized. The optical nonlinearity of solid-core and gas-filled hollow-core fibers provides a valuable medium for the generation of quantum resource states as well as for quantum frequency conversion between the operating wavelengths of existing quantum photonic material architectures.

Quantum metaphotonics: Recent advances and perspective

Quantum metaphotonics has emerged as a cutting-edge subfield of meta-optics employing subwavelength resonators and their planar structures, such as metasurfaces, to generate, manipulate, and detect quantum states of light. It holds a great potential for the miniaturization of current bulky quantum optical elements by developing a design of on-chip quantum systems for various applications of quantum technologies.

Beneficial and detrimental entanglement for quantum battery charging

The authors establish a general, implementation-independent framework for determining whether highly entangled states can increase the maximum charging power of quantum batteries. Their approach separates the influence of entanglement from effects associated with the global quantum speed limit and the batteries’ energy gap.

Terrestrial very-long-baseline atom interferometry: Workshop summary

This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves.

Lattice Boltzmann–Carleman quantum algorithm and circuit for fluid flows at moderate Reynolds number

The study presents a quantum-computing algorithm for fluid flows that applies Carleman linearization to the lattice Boltzmann method. It first demonstrates that the corresponding classical Carleman procedure converges for Kolmogorov-like flows at moderate Reynolds numbers.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution over 28.6 km fiber with an integrated silicon photonic receiver chip

Photonic integration is helping quantum key distribution achieve better performance, lower costs, and smaller dimensions, supporting its broader deployment. Continuous-variable quantum key distribution is particularly suitable for integration because it is compatible with commercially available optical-communication devices.

Whispering gallery mode sensing through the lens of quantum optics, artificial intelligence, and nanoscale catalysis

Sensors based on whispering gallery mode resonances can detect extremely small environmental changes at the spatial and temporal scales of individual molecules. In experiments, however, single-molecule signals are difficult to distinguish from thermal, mechanical, and fundamental optical shot noise.

Phase transitions and virtual exceptional points in quantum emitters coupled to dissipative baths

Controlling interactions between atoms and photons in engineered environments is fundamental to quantum optics and emerging quantum technologies. Non-Hermitian photonic reservoirs provide flexible platforms for this control because dissipation can substantially reshape their spectral and dynamical behavior.

Identifying gap-closings in open non-Hermitian systems by biorthogonal polarization

The study examines gap closings in one- and two-dimensional two-band tight-binding models with non-Hermitian hopping and open boundaries along one direction. It shows that the bulk spectra under open and periodic boundary conditions do not match, reflecting an intrinsic feature of non-Hermitian systems.

High accuracy exponential decomposition of bath correlation functions for arbitrary and structured spectral densities: Emerging methodologies and new approaches

The study investigates how bath correlation functions can be represented as combinations of complex exponential functions for realistic modeling of open quantum systems using hierarchical equations of motion. It reviews decomposition methods in both the time and frequency domains and evaluates their efficiency and accuracy across multiple correlation functions.

Linear response of molecular polaritons

The authors show that collective strong coupling between many molecular emitters and a cavity photon mode can be represented as a quantum impurity problem in which the photon interacts with a bath of anharmonic transitions. When the number of molecules is very large, this bath can be replaced by an effective harmonic one, greatly simplifying the system to coupled harmonic oscillators.
