Stimuli-responsive hydrogel dressing for wound healing

Wound healing is a complex, variable, and time-dynamic repair process. Wounds can be classified as acute wounds or chronic wounds, and effective wound management is still a major challenge in clinical nursing settings. The wound microenvironment is collectively regulated by internal biomolecules, external drugs, and external sanitation.

Boron nitride nanosheets, quantum dots, and dots: Synthesis, properties, and biomedical applications

This review examines three aspects of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanomaterials: properties, synthesis methods, and biomedical applications. We focus the scope of review on three types of h-BN nanostructures: boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs, few-layered h-BN, larger than ∼100 nm in lateral dimensions), boron nitride quantum dots (BN QDs, smaller than ∼10 nm in all dimensions, with inherent excitation-dependent fluorescence), and boron nitride dots (BN dots, smaller than ∼10 nm in all dimensions, wide bandgap without noise fluorescence).

Stretching and immobilizing a single DNA molecule on a glass surface using pressure flow in a microchannel for super-resolution imaging

Single-DNA analysis combines fluorescence microscopy with a method of stretching a single DNA molecule from its random coil shape to a linear shape. Although super-resolution imaging methods can be used for analyzing the DNA with a higher lateral resolution, these methods require several seconds to minutes to obtain a super-resolution image of the entire DNA molecule.

Roles of doping in enhancing the performance of graphene/graphene-like semiconductors

Graphene is renowned for its excellent chemical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, which arise from its unique bonding structure. However, graphene is intrinsically a zero-bandgap material, limiting its development in the field of flexible nanoelectronics.

VIS/NIR/FIR spectroscopy for blood glucose monitoring: A review

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is of vital significance for the health status and quality of life of diabetic patients, providing guidance for diet, exercise, and medication. However, most commercial monitoring devices have been designed based on invasive or minimally invasive technologies, which seriously limits their further popularity.

Hydrophilic hard-magnetic soft robots: A new approach for precise droplet manipulation

Precise droplet manipulation is critical in material synthesis, biochemical detection, and tissue engineering. However, the droplet velocity and volume manipulated by magnetic techniques are restricted owing to the low magnetic force exerted on magnetic particles and beads. Furthermore, magnetic particles are prone to contaminate droplets owing to residues and corrosion.

A simulation and experimental study of a valveless piezoelectric micropump based on the synthetic jet principle

A stacked piezoelectric micropump based on the synthetic jet principle with a size of 22 × 22 × 5 mm3 is designed and fabricated. Through theoretical and finite element method (FEM) analysis, the conditions for achieving a synthetic jet structure are obtained, and the gas flow properties inside the chamber are analyzed. The first-order mode and resonant frequency of the piezoelectric actuator are simulated.

Ultrasensitive iontronic pressure sensor based on microstructure ionogel dielectric layer for wearable electronics

Flexible pressure sensors show great promise for applications in such fields as electronic skin, healthcare, and intelligent robotics. Traditional capacitive pressure sensors, however, face the problem of low sensitivity, which limits their wider application. In this paper, a flexible capacitive pressure sensor with microstructured ionization layer is fabricated by a sandwich-type process, with a low-cost and simple process of inverted molding with sandpapers being used to form a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer ionic film with double-sided microstructure as the dielectric layer of the sensor, with silver nanowires as electrodes.

Surface passivation approaches for silicon, germanium, and III–V semiconductors

Semiconductors are key to our modern society, enabling a myriad of fields, including electronics, photovoltaics, and photonics. The performance of semiconductor devices can be significantly hampered by defects occurring at the surfaces and interfaces of the semiconductor. As semiconductor devices continue to be scaled and nanostructuring is becoming more commonplace, such defects are increasingly becoming the limiting factor in the device performance.

XPS guide for insulators: Electron flood gun operation and optimization, surface charging, controlled charging, differential charging, useful FWHMs, problems and solutions, and advice

Current day x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) instrument makers have made significant advances in charge compensation systems over the last 20 years, which makes it easier to analyze insulators, but samples still have many differences in chemistry, dielectric properties, sizes, surface roughness, etc. that force instrument operators to tweak flood gun settings if they want or need to obtain high quality chemical state spectra that provide the most information.

Critical examination of the use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) O 1s to characterize oxygen vacancies in catalytic materials and beyond

In 2021, Idriss published a manuscript outlining that an assignment commonly utilized in catalyst research is not feasible. Despite this, the idea that you can measure oxygen vacancies (OV) with ex situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) persists. A review of 427 manuscripts citing Idriss’s work found that for the citations related to catalysis (55%), those with an interest in OV were more likely to avoid using XPS to identify OV.

Carbon footprint of helium recovery systems

Helium is a finite global resource, which is becoming vitally important to recover and reuse as it continually diminishes. The helium recovery process uses plant machinery that can consume significant amounts of power and generate a large carbon footprint. Many organizations around the world are actively trying to reduce their carbon footprint and, therefore, lessen the impact of their operations on the climate.

The paradigm of magnetic molecule in quantum matter: Slow molecular spin relaxation

The quantum nature of single-ion magnets, single-molecule magnets, and single-chain magnets has been manifested among other phenomena by magnetic hysteresis due to slow spin relaxation, competing with fast quantum tunneling at low temperatures. Slow spin relaxation, described by Arrhenius-type law with the effective barrier energies Ueff = 50 cm–1, was discovered 3 decades ago in paramagnetic Mn12-acetate complex of oxy-bridged mixed-valence manganese ions, below the blocking temperature TB = 3 K.

Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy of TIPS-pentacene

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, particularly acenes, are gaining attention as candidates for organic semiconductors. TIPS-pentacene, a functionalized acene with triisopropylsilyl (TIPS) side groups, demonstrates enhanced physical stability, solubility, and superior charge transport properties due to improved molecular packing.
