Roles of doping in enhancing the performance of graphene/graphene-like semiconductors

Graphene is renowned for its excellent chemical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and optical properties, which arise from its unique bonding structure. However, graphene is intrinsically a zero-bandgap material, limiting its development in the field of flexible nanoelectronics. To expand the range of applications for graphene in electronic devices, it is crucial to develop the strategies for inducing a bandgap. One of the most effective methods is chemical doping.

Nondestructive analysis of threading mixed dislocations in SiC using x-ray topography and birefringence

In this study, we combined x-ray topography (XRT) and birefringence imaging to identify the Burgers vectors in threading mixed dislocations (TMDs) in SiC. XRT was utilized to determine the screw components of the Burgers vectors, while the edge components were ascertained using birefringence images obtained by polarized light microscopy. Our analysis, validated against transmission electron microscopy and large-angle convergent beam electron diffraction, provides a novel, nondestructive approach for examining defects in SiC power devices.

Piezoelectric thin films and their applications in MEMS: A review

With the increasing demand for devices in miniaturization, accuracy, and low power consumption, developing microdevices in the form of piezoelectric thin films is significant for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications. Piezoelectric thin films offer advantages of miniaturization and low power consumption, holding immense potential in MEMS, especially with advancements in micro-nanomanufacturing technologies.

Molecular dynamics simulations of heat transport using machine-learned potentials: A mini-review and tutorial on GPUMD with neuroevolution potentials

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations play an important role in understanding and engineering heat transport properties of complex materials. An essential requirement for reliably predicting heat transport properties is the use of accurate and efficient interatomic potentials. Recently, machine-learned potentials (MLPs) have shown great promise in providing the required accuracy for a broad range of materials. In this mini-review and tutorial

First-principles calculations of defects and electron–phonon interactions: Seminal contributions of Audrius Alkauskas to the understanding of recombination processes

First-principles calculations of defects and electron–phonon interactions play a critical role in the design and optimization of materials for electronic and optoelectronic devices. The late Audrius Alkauskas made seminal contributions to developing rigorous first-principles methodologies for the computation of defects and electron–phonon interactions, especially in the context of understanding the fundamental mechanisms of carrier recombination in semiconductors.

Attosecond physics and technology

In this Perspective, we provide an overview of the field of attosecond physics and technology for which the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L'Huillier. We look at the current state-of-the-art in attosecond timescale measurements and recent advances enabled by the light field driven technology inspired by the earlier work in the field. We end this Perspective with some comments on the exciting future directions now developing in the field.

Diamagnetic levitation of water realized with a simple device consisting of ordinary permanent magnets

Diamagnetic levitation is an appealing technique for levitating objects at room temperature without subjecting the sample to potentially damaging control fields, such as high-intensity laser light or sound pressure. However, owing to the extremely low magnetic susceptibility of diamagnetic materials, except for bismuth and graphite, diamagnetic levitation generally necessitates the use of exceptionally strong magnets, such as those found in world-class high-field facilities

Performance of antenna-based and Rydberg quantum RF sensors in the electrically small regime

Rydberg atom electric field sensors are tunable quantum sensors that can perform sensitive radio frequency measurements. Their qualities have piqued interest at longer wavelengths where their small size compares favorably to impedance-matched antennas. Here, we compare the signal detection sensitivity of cm-scale Rydberg sensors to similarly sized room-temperature electrically small antennas with active and passive receiver backends.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution system: Past, present, and future

Quantum key distribution provides secure keys with information-theoretic security ensured by the principle of quantum mechanics. The continuous-variable version of quantum key distribution using coherent states offers the advantages of its compatibility with telecom industry, e.g., using commercial laser and homodyne detector, is now going through a booming period.

Virus inactivation by matching the vibrational resonance

Physical approaches based on irradiation provide advances for the prevention and treatment of viral infections, while recognizing that certain chemical inactivation techniques demonstrate significant effectiveness alongside physical methods. By generating resonant vibrations of complete virus particles, which are in the GHz range and quite high compared to that of human cells, viruses can be inactivated.

Nonlinear optics at epsilon near zero: From origins to new materials

In the continuously evolving realm of nonlinear optics, epsilon near zero (ENZ) materials have captured significant scientific interest, becoming a compelling focal point over the past decade. During this time, researchers have shown extraordinary demonstrations of nonlinear processes such as unity order index change via intensity dependent refractive index, enhanced second harmonic generation, saturable absorption in ultra-thin films and more recently, frequency shifting via time modulation of permittivity.
