Science of a coffee cup: A physicist walks into a bar…

… and annoys everyone with unsolicited experiments. The present paper proposes a short pedagogical review of the various phenomena that can be observed in a coffee cup with little to no equipment.

A review of deep learning for super-resolution in fluid flows

Integrating deep learning with fluid dynamics presents a promising path for advancing the comprehension of complex flow phenomena within both theoretical and practical engineering domains. Despite this potential, considerable challenges persist, particularly regarding the calibration and training of deep learning models.

On the popping sound and liquid sloshing when opening a beer bottle

The opening of transparent 0.33 l swing-top bottles, containing home-brewed ginger beer under 2–5 bars of pressure, was recorded with a high-speed camera at frame rates between 3000 fps and 16 800 fps. Simultaneously, the sound was registered with a microphone of a nominal frequency range up to 100 kHz and a sampling rate between 200 and 500 kS/s.

Interpretable active learning meta-modeling for the association dynamics of telechelic polymers on colloidal particles

The formulation of waterborne coating fluids composed of colloidal particles interacting with associative polymers as rheology modifiers is a complex multiscale problem with competing design requirements, for which the selection of new formulations remains largely empirical. To move toward rational multiscale design, we here develop active learning meta-models that capture from fine-grained molecular/colloidal simulations the association thermodynamics and dynamics of associative polymers bridging the particles.

Nonlinear rheological behavior and flow-induced crystallization of low-entangled UHMWPE/HDPE melt blends: Insights from transient shear and extensional flows

The molecular blending achieved by the incorporation of up to 20 wt. % of UHMWPE via melt blending, facilitated by its initially low-entangled nature (dis-UH), is assessed through nonlinear transient shear and extensional rheology. The findings demonstrate that by adding dis-UH, the rheological properties of the blends are enhanced significantly

In situ experimental investigation of fiber orientation kinetics and rheology of polymer composites in shear flow

In this study, we experimentally investigate the fiber orientation kinetics and rheology of fiber-filled polymer melts in shear flow. A novel setup is designed with custom-built bottom and top geometries that are mounted on a conventional rotational rheometer. Shear flow between parallel sliding plates is applied by vertical movement of the top geometry.

Numerical approaches to capture fluid–structure interaction considering interfaces for offshore structures

Recent developments in offshore renewable energy facilities, such as wind turbines and photovoltaic generators, often face challenges posed by the harsh offshore environments to which these structures are exposed. To ensure the continuous operation of these facilities, reliable numerical methods are urgently needed to capture the dynamics of ocean waves and their complex interactions with large-scale offshore structures.

A review on the development of large-scale detonation-driven shock tunnels and the application in hypersonic flow tests

With the boom in deep space exploration by China since the beginning of the 21st century, the demand for high-enthalpy hypersonic shock tunnels has continued to increase. In this paper, three types of shock tunnels using free-piston, heated light-gas, and detonation drivers, respectively, are briefly summarized and compared.

Comprehensive review of cuttings transport in wellbore drilling: Mechanisms, challenges, and future directions

In the rapidly changing field of drilling technology, the efficient management of cuttings transport within the wellbore has become a critical challenge, especially as the complexity of deviated and extended-reach wells continues to grow. This review brings together experimental, numerical, and analytical studies on cuttings transport, underscoring the role of effective borehole cleaning in mitigating common drilling issues such as pipe sticking and poor cementation.

Microfluidic tools to model, monitor, and modulate the gut–brain axis

The gut–brain axis (GBA) connects the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system (CNS) via the peripheral nervous system and humoral (e.g., circulatory and lymphatic system) routes. The GBA comprises a sophisticated interaction between various mammalian cells, gut microbiota, and systemic factors.

Microfluidics for the biological analysis of atmospheric ice-nucleating particles: Perspectives and challenges

Atmospheric ice-nucleating particles (INPs) make up a vanishingly small proportion of atmospheric aerosol but are key to triggering the freezing of supercooled liquid water droplets, altering the lifetime and radiative properties of clouds and having a substantial impact on weather and climate. However, INPs are notoriously difficult to model due to a lack of information on their global sources, sinks, concentrations, and activity, necessitating the development of new instrumentation for quantifying and characterizing INPs in a rapid and automated manner.

From specialization to broad adoption: Key trends in droplet microfluidic innovations enhancing accessibility to non-experts

Droplet microfluidics has emerged as a versatile and powerful tool for various analytical applications, including single-cell studies, synthetic biology, directed evolution, and diagnostics. Initially, access to droplet microfluidics was predominantly limited to specialized technology labs. However, the landscape is shifting with the increasing availability of commercialized droplet manipulation technologies, thereby expanding its use to non-specialized labs.
