Hidden turbulence in van Gogh's The Starry Night

Turbulent skies have often inspired artists, particularly in the iconic swirls of Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night. For an extended period, debate has raged over whether the flow pattern in this masterpiece adheres to Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence.

Recent advances in marine hydrodynamics

Marine hydrodynamics is fundamental to marine, coastal, and offshore engineering and covers a wide range of topics related to wave interactions with ships, maritime structures, and the ocean environment. In recent years, due to climate change and energy security concerns, the subject of marine hydrodynamics has grown in importance, being widely applied in the field of offshore renewable energy, coastal protection, green shipping, polar engineering, and more.

Protorheology

We all instinctively poke, bounce, scoop, and observe materials to understand rheological properties quickly. Yet, these observations are rarely analyzed quantitatively. To address this, here we introduce the paradigm of protorheology: approximate quantitative inference from simple observations. Several case studies demonstrate how protorheology is an inclusive entry to rheology for a broad range of practitioners and strengthens the confidence and interpretation of accurate laboratory measurements.

No yield stress required: Stress-activated flow in simple yield-stress fluids

An elastoviscoplastic constitutive equation is proposed to describe both the elastic and rate-dependent plastic deformation behavior of Carbopol® dispersions, commonly used to study yield-stress fluids. The model, a variant of the nonlinear Maxwell model with stress-dependent relaxation time, eliminates the need for a separate Herschel–Bulkley yield stress.

Multiscale modeling and simulation of turbulent flows in porous media

Numerical simulation is an important tool for understanding the physics of flows in porous media and for making predictions. The state of the art of multiscale modeling and simulation of turbulent flows in porous media is reviewed in this paper.

A review of bubble collapse near particles

Bubble–particle interactions are of great importance in cavitation bubble dynamics, especially in the case of silt-laden flow. In this paper, a review of the physical mechanisms involved in bubble collapse near particles is presented, with an emphasis on the jet and shock wave phenomenon.

Development of a dual-flow tissue perfusion device for modeling the gastrointestinal tract–brain axis

Despite the large number of microfluidic devices that have been described over the past decade for the study of tissues and organs, few have become widely adopted. There are many reasons for this lack of adoption, primarily that devices are constructed for a single purpose or because they are highly complex and require relatively expensive investment in facilities and training.

Naturally derived colloidal rods (CR) are promising building blocks for developing sustainable soft materials. Engineering new materials based on naturally derived CR requires an in-depth understanding of the structural dynamics and self-assembly of CR in dispersion under processing conditions.

Mesh deep Q network: A deep reinforcement learning framework for improving meshes in computational fluid dynamics

Meshing is a critical, but user-intensive process necessary for stable and accurate simulations in computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Mesh generation is often a bottleneck in CFD pipelines. Adaptive meshing techniques allow the mesh to be updated automatically to produce an accurate solution for the problem at hand.

A data-driven physics-informed neural network for predicting the viscosity of nanofluids

Nanofluids have been applied in various fields, such as solar collectors, petroleum engineering, and chemical engineering, due to their superior properties compared to traditional fluids. Among the various thermophysical properties of nanofluids, viscosity plays a critical role in thermal applications involving heat transfer and fluid flow.
