Present and future of micro-transfer printing for heterogeneous photonic integrated circuits

We present the current state of the art in micro-transfer printing for heterogeneously integrated silicon photonic integrated circuits. The versatility of the technology is highlighted, as is the way ahead to make this technology a key enabler for next-generation photonic systems-on-chip.

Heterogeneous integration of a high-speed lithium niobate modulator on silicon nitride using micro-transfer printing

Integrated photonic systems require fast modulators to keep up with demanding operation speeds and increasing data rates. The silicon nitride integrated photonic platform is of particular interest for applications such as datacom, light detection and ranging (LIDAR), quantum photonics, and computing owing to its low losses and CMOS compatibility.

Process qualification, additive manufacturing, and postprocessing of a hydrogen peroxide/kerosene 6 kN aerospike breadboard engine

This contribution addresses the complete process chain of an annular aerospike breadboard engine fabricated by laser powder bed fusion using the nickel-based superalloy Inconel® 718. In order to qualify the material and process for this high-temperature application, an extensive material characterization campaign including density and roughness measurements, as well as tensile tests at room temperature, 700, and 900 °C, was conducted.

Laterally coupled photonic crystal surface emitting laser arrays

We propose and investigate a novel coherent laser array design based on laterally coupled photonic crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs). As a new type of semiconductor laser technology, PCSELs have field confinement in a planar cavity and laser beam emission in the surface normal direction. By engineering lateral couplings between PCSELs with heterostructure photonic crystal designs, we can achieve coherent operations from an array of PCSELs.

Advancing thermochemical diagnostics in kilogram-scale explosive fireballs via laser absorption spectroscopy

This article presents methodological advances in the state-of-the-art for making time-dependent, thermochemical measurements within kilogram-scale explosive post-detonation fireballs utilizing tunable laser absorption spectroscopy. This measurement capability is critical for validating multi-scale, multi-physics models of post-detonation dynamics.

Pound–Drever–Hall locking scheme free from Trojan operating points

The Pound–Drever–Hall (PDH) technique is a popular method for stabilizing the frequency of a laser to a stable optical resonator or, vice versa, the length of a resonator to the frequency of a stable laser. We propose a refinement of the technique yielding an “infinite” dynamic (capture) range so that a resonator is correctly locked to the seed frequency, even after large perturbations.

A flexible beamline combining XUV attosecond pulses with few-femtosecond UV and near-infrared pulses for time-resolved experiments

We describe a beamline where few-femtosecond ultraviolet (UV) pulses are generated and synchronized to few-cycle near-infrared (NIR) and extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses. The UV light is obtained via third-harmonic generation in argon or neon gas when focusing a phase-stabilized NIR driving field inside a glass cell that was designed to support high pressures for enhanced conversion efficiency.
