Selecting embedding delays: An overview of embedding techniques and a new method using persistent homology

Delay embedding methods are a staple tool in the field of time series analysis and prediction. However, the selection of embedding parameters can have a big impact on the resulting analysis. This has led to the creation of a large number of methods to optimize the selection of parameters such as embedding lag.

Sex, ducks, and rock “n” roll: Mathematical model of sexual response

In this paper, we derive and analyze a mathematical model of a sexual response. As a starting point, we discuss two studies that proposed a connection between a sexual response cycle and a cusp catastrophe and explain why that connection is incorrect but suggests an analogy with excitable systems.

Perspectives on adaptive dynamical systems

Adaptivity is a dynamical feature that is omnipresent in nature, socio-economics, and technology. For example, adaptive couplings appear in various real-world systems, such as the power grid, social, and neural networks, and they form the backbone of closed-loop control strategies and machine learning algorithms.

Derivation of the Maxwell–Schrödinger equations: A note on the infrared sector of the radiation field

We slightly extend prior results about the derivation of the Maxwell–Schrödinger equations from the bosonic Pauli–Fierz Hamiltonian. More concretely, we show that the findings from Leopold and Pickl [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 52(5), 4900–4936 (2020)] about the coherence of the quantized electromagnetic field also hold for soft photons with small energies.

Quantum geodesics in quantum mechanics

We show that the standard Heisenberg algebra of quantum mechanics admits a noncommutative differential calculus Ω¹ depending on the Hamiltonian p²/2m + V(x), and a flat quantum connection ∇ with torsion such that a previous quantum-geometric formulation of flow along autoparallel curves (or “geodesics”) is exactly Schrödinger’s equation.

Bistritzer–MacDonald dynamics in twisted bilayer graphene

The Bistritzer–MacDonald (BM) model, introduced by Bistritzer and MacDonald [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 108, 12233–12237 (2011); arXiv:1009.4203], attempts to capture electronic properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), even at incommensurate twist angles, by using an effective periodic model over the bilayer moiré pattern.

Transmission–reflection-integrated multifunctional metasurfaces for multiplexed acoustic wave manipulation

Considering the extraordinary wavefront modulation properties, acoustic metasurfaces have been extensively utilized to achieve powerful wave-manipulation functionalities. The next-generation acoustic metasurfaces are urgently required to encode more information capacity and process an increasing number of signal channels in a compact device, which needs more degrees of freedom for multifunctional wavefront modulation.

Flow structure near three phase contact line (TPCL) of evaporating liquids plays a significant role in liquid wetting and dewetting, liquid film evaporation, and boiling. Despite the wide focus it receives, the interacting mechanisms therein remain elusive and in specific cases, controversial.

CREST—A program for the exploration of low-energy molecular chemical space

Conformer–rotamer sampling tool (CREST) is an open-source program for the efficient and automated exploration of molecular chemical space. Originally developed in Pracht et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 22, 7169 (2020)] as an automated driver for calculations at the extended tight-binding level (xTB), it offers a variety of molecular- and metadynamics simulations, geometry optimization, and molecular structure analysis capabilities.

A theory of pitch for the hydrodynamic properties of molecules, helices, and achiral swimmers at low Reynolds number

We present a theory for pitch, a matrix property that is linked to the coupling of rotational and translational motion of rigid bodies at low Reynolds numbers. The pitch matrix is a geometric property of objects in contact with a surrounding fluid, and it can be decomposed into three principal axes of pitch and their associated moments of pitch.
