Effects of organosolv pretreatment conditions for lignocellulosic biomass in biorefinery applications: A review

The concept of a biorefinery that provides valuable bioproducts from biomass conversion instead of fossil based products is presented. One of the main biorefinery products, bioethanol, can be produced from sugar, starch, or lignocellulosic-based biomass.

Pumped thermal grid storage with heat exchange

A thermal heat-pump grid storage technology is described based on closed-cycle Brayton engine transfers of heat from a cryogenic storage fluid to molten solar salt. Round-trip efficiency, computed as a function of turbomachinery polytropic efficiency and total heat exchanger steel mass, is found to be competitive with that of pumped hydroelectric storage.

Polymer solar cells: P3HT:PCBM and beyond

For the last two decades, polymer solar cells (PSCs) have been a cynosure of the photovoltaic community, as evidenced by the growing number of patent applications and scientific publications. Efforts to achieve high power conversion efficiency in PSC, propelled by advances in device architecture, material combination, and nanomorphology control, evolved into poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT):phenyl-C61-Butyric-Acid-Methyl Ester (PCBM) bulk heterojunction PSCs, which had been the best seller in PSC research for a decade.

A guideline to solar forecasting research practice: Reproducible, operational, probabilistic or physically-based, ensemble, and skill (ROPES)

Over the past decade, significant progress in solar forecasting has been made. Nevertheless, there are concerns about duplication, long-term value, and reproducibility; this is referred to as the “solar forecasting bubble.”

Piezocatalytic activity of CaO–Bi₂O₃–B₂O₃ glass-ceramics under ultrasonic vibrations

Transparent glass-ceramics of CaO–Bi₂O₃–B₂O₃ (CBBO) were fabricated using the conventional melt quench technique. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were employed to confirm the phase of the prepared samples.

Zn–air batteries have only been used in limited applications, such as hearing aid batteries, due to their low power density and standard voltage of around 1.4 V. Therefore, to use Zn–air batteries as a drive power source in cutting-edge devices such as drones, it is essential to improve the drive voltage and output power density.
