Experimental evidences of the direct influence of external magnetic fields on the mechanism of the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

The use of magnetic fields as external stimuli to improve the kinetics of electrochemical reactions is attracting substantial attention, given their potential to reduce energy losses. Despite recent reports showing a positive effect on catalytic performance upon applying a magnetic field to a working electrode, there are still many uncertainties and a lack of experimental evidence correlating the presence of the magnetic field to the electrocatalytic performance.

Electrolyte design for reversible metal electrodeposition-based electrochromic energy-saving devices

Reversible metal electrodeposition (RME)-based electrochromic devices have been attracting significant research interest due to their merits of low cost, simple configuration, and high extinction coefficients. As the key component in the electrochromic system, RME electrolytes with various metal ions and additives have endowed the RME device with flexible functionalities in energy-saving applications such as energy-efficient displays, smart windows, and camouflages

Catalyst deactivation during water electrolysis: Understanding and mitigation

Electrocatalyst deactivation poses a significant obstacle to transitioning water electrolysis technology from laboratory-scale to industrial applications. To inspire more effort on this topic, this contribution explores the structural factors contributing to catalyst deactivation, elucidating the underlying mechanisms with detailed case studies of hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions.

Photosynthetically active radiation separation model for high-latitude regions in agrivoltaic systems modeling

Photosynthetically active radiation is a key parameter for determining crop yield. Separating photosynthetically active radiation into direct and diffuse components is significant to agrivoltaic systems. The varying shading conditions caused by the solar panels produce a higher contribution of diffuse irradiance reaching the crops.

Evaluation of wind resource uncertainty on energy production estimates for offshore wind farms

Wind farm design generally relies on the use of historical data and analytical wake models to predict farm quantities, such as annual energy production (AEP). Uncertainty in input wind data that drive these predictions can translate to significant uncertainty in output quantities.

Ancillary services from wind and solar energy in modern power grids: A comprehensive review and simulation study

Renewable energy sources like wind and solar have increased demand for surplus power capacity. The demand is primarily fueled by the growing impact of forecasting errors associated with these intermittent energy sources. Implementing advanced control methods for automatic generation control (AGC) is essential to integrate wind and solar power with conventional generation sources to balance the power system and reduce reliance on traditional reserves.

Feedback cooling of an insulating high-Q diamagnetically levitated plate

Levitated systems in vacuum have many potential applications ranging from new types of inertial and magnetic sensors through to fundamental issues in quantum science, the generation of massive Schrödinger cats, and the connections between gravity and quantum physics. In this work, we demonstrate the passive, diamagnetic levitation of a centimeter-sized massive oscillator, which is fabricated using a method that ensures that the material, though highly diamagnetic, is an electrical insulator.

Determination of inelastic mean free path for solid polymer electrolytes: PTMC:LiBOB and PCL:LiBOB

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) has been widely applied in the field of battery studies. However, the lack of knowledge regarding the inelastic mean free path (IMFP) for studied systems limits the interpretation of spectroscopic results. In this work, the IMFP of poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC), poly(
-caprolactone) (PCL), and the solid polymer electrolytes consisting of lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) together with PTMC or PCL has been determined using PES at a photoelectron kinetic energy of 8.7 keV.

Compositionally complex carbide ceramics: A perspective on irradiation damage

Extensive experimental and computational studies have demonstrated outstanding physical and chemical properties of the novel materials of compositionally complex carbides (CCCs), enabling their promising applications in advanced fission and fusion energy systems. This perspective provides a comprehensive overview of radiation damage behavior reported in the literature to understand the fundamental mechanisms related to the impact of multi-principal metal components on phase stability, irradiation-induced defect clusters, irradiation hardening, and thermal conductivity of compositionally complex carbides.

Machine learning enhanced control co-design optimization of an immersion cooled battery thermal management system

The development of lithium-ion battery technology has ensured that battery thermal management systems are an essential component of the battery pack for next-generation energy storage systems. Using dielectric immersion cooling, researchers have demonstrated the ability to attain high heat transfer rates due to the direct contact between cells and the coolant.

The wetting of H2O by CO2

Biphasic interfaces are complex but fascinating regimes that display a number of properties distinct from those of the bulk. The CO2–H2O interface, in particular, has been the subject of a number of studies on account of its importance for the carbon life cycle as well as carbon capture and sequestration schemes. Despite this attention, there remain a number of open questions on the nature of the CO2–H2O interface, particularly concerning the interfacial tension and phase behavior of CO2 at the interface.

Molecular driving forces for water adsorption in MOF-808: A comparative analysis with UiO-66

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with their unique porous structures and versatile functionality, have emerged as promising materials for the adsorption, separation, and storage of diverse molecular species. In this study, we investigate water adsorption in MOF-808, a prototypical MOF that shares the same secondary building unit (SBU) as UiO-66, and elucidate how differences in topology and connectivity between the two MOFs influence the adsorption mechanism.
