    Gold Open Access: Green Open Access:
    • Self-archive your accepted manuscript immediately upon acceptance in an institutional or subject repository, personal website, or funder platform — with no embargo period.
    • Share your work at no cost, as there is no article processing charges (APC) or associated fees.
    • Enhance the visibility and impact of your research by making it accessible to a broader audience, including those without subscription access.

    Simplifying Compliance with Public Access Mandates

    With AIP Publishing, authors can meet NIH and other public access requirements—regardless of how or where you publish—through a streamlined green open access pathway. What Is Green Open Access? Green open access is when a version of a scholarly article, usually the author’s accepted manuscript (AAM) or post-print version, is made freely available online. This typically involves sharing the article in an institutional or subject-specific repository, or on a personal website. The rules around green open access can vary depending on the publisher’s policies and funding agreements—some publishers require an embargo period or charge fees for this practice. How It Works with AIP Publishing:
    • No embargo period — We allow sharing of the author’s accepted manuscript (AMM) immediately upon acceptance.
    • No extra fees — Green open access is completely free.
    • Easy compliance — Compatible with funder platforms like PubMed Central (PMC) as well as institutional and subject-specific repositories.
    • Simple process — Upon acceptance, authors can:
      • Locate their AAM (the version prior to final formatting).
      • Add the article’s DOI and full citation to the AAM document.
      • Upload the AAM to the repository of their choice such as PubMed Central, an institutional repository, or a personal website.

    New NIH Policy? We’ve Got You Covered

    As of July 1, 2025, the NIH Public Access Policy requires that all NIH-funded research be made publicly accessible without embargo upon publication. At AIP Publishing, we’re committed to ensuring researchers can easily comply with this policy—no matter where or how they publish—through both gold and green open access pathways. For Gold Open Access Journals
    • AIP Publishing deposits NIH-funded articles into PubMed Central on behalf of authors at the time of publication.
    • Articles will be made publicly available upon publication, and authors will receive an email with their PMCID from AIP Publishing’s researcher support team.
    For Hybrid Subscription Journals AIP Publishing’s liberal green open access (OA) allows authors to self-archive accepted manuscripts immediately upon acceptance in PubMed Central at no cost, with no embargo period. To do so, authors can:
    • Update the Author Accepted Manuscript with the journal citation including the DOI to ensure that anyone accessing the manuscript can easily find the Version of Record. The DOI will become active upon publication.
    • Log in to the NIH Manuscript Submission System at https://nihms.nih.gov and follow the prompts to upload the Accepted Author Manuscript and associated metadata.
    Our author-friendly publishing policies ensure NIH compliance while maintaining flexibility and choice for authors. Full guidance is provided during the submission process for NIH-funded researchers.

    CHORUS: Strengthening Access & Discoverability

    AIP Publishing also participates in the CHORUS initiative, which enhances public access to funded research through partnerships with federal agencies, funders, and publishers:
    • In response to government or funder requirements, we make the Accepted Manuscript version publicly available via CHORUS infrastructure.
    • These manuscripts are licensed under AIP Publishing’s License to Publish, unless otherwise mandated.
    • CHORUS services help ensure persistent linking, compliance monitoring, and content discoverability across the research ecosystem.
