A decade of biology with XFELs: The 10th Annual BioXFEL International Conference
The development of the X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) has taken crystallography from an era of snapshot images to dynamic “movies” of molecules in action. The fast time-resolved experiments required rethinking many of the standard ways of doing crystallography—everything from growing the crystals to getting them into the X-ray beam to collecting, analyzing and interpreting the diffraction patterns. One major contributor has the membership of the NSF Science and Technology Center known as BioXFEL. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the formation of that Center and this special issue is designed to mark this milestone by publishing reports from all scientists on past, present, and future research and method development on time-dependent processes in biology as probed by XFELs and related spectroscopies.
