Chirality of Plasmonic Structures and Materials
The spatial displacement of charges in metallic nanostructures lies at the core of the spectral tunability of plasmonic systems, as their geometry determines and constrains the resonant modes that metallic nanostructures can support. This property makes plasmonic nanostructures an ideal candidate to create strong chiroptical responses by using structures with chiral shapes or arrangements. Simultaneously, the strong electromagnetic near fields created by these systems can enhance the dichroic signal of chiral molecules, allowing for the precise sampling of chiral asymmetry down to single molecules. The development of the field of chiral plasmonics is thus driving progress in different facets of nanoscience and nanotechnology, including synthesis, fabrication, measurement and simulation techniques, as well as propelling fundamental and applied research in molecular science, photochemistry, physics, biosensing, and medicine. With this Special Issue, we aim to showcase a cross section of topical advances, both experimental and theoretical, to encourage the cross-pollination of perspectives on chiral plasmonics.
