Reconfigurable inverse-designed phase-change photonics

Chalcogenide phase-change materials (PCMs) offer a promising approach to programmable photonics thanks to their nonvolatile, reversible phase transitions and high refractive index contrast. However, conventional designs are limited by global phase control over entire PCM thin films between fully amorphous and fully crystalline states, which restricts device functionality and confines design flexibility and programmability.

Research trends in single-photon detectors based on superconducting wires

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are the leading technology for photon counting at near-infrared wavelengths, offering unparalleled performance across multiple metrics and enabling diverse applications. Two decades after their introduction, SNSPDs have made significant progress and reached a mature stage of development.

Advancing terahertz photomixers through the integration of photoconductive antennas with optical waveguides

Continuous wave (cw) terahertz (THz) radiation has a wide array of applications, ranging from sensing to next-generation wireless communication links. Industrial applications frequently require THz systems that are broadband, highly efficient, and compact. Photomixer-based solutions hold promise in meeting these demands, offering extremely broadband operation and the potential for miniaturization through photonic integration.

Laser powder bed fusion of a nanocrystalline Finemet Fe-based alloy for soft magnetic applications

The aim of this work is to explore the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processability window of the nanocrystalline soft magnetic Finemet alloy. With that purpose, several laser power and scan speed values and a meander scanning strategy were probed to process simple geometry specimens.

Inline failure detection in laser beam welding of battery cells: Acoustic and spectral emission analysis for quality monitoring

The mobility sector is considered a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. As a result, many countries have initiated the transition from fossil fuel-powered to electrified powertrains. This transformation of the powertrain concept will lead to a rapid increase in the production of electric vehicles and, therefore, to a high demand for so-called traction batteries.

Study of burst mode for enhancing the ps-laser cutting performance of lithium-ion battery electrodes

The demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has increased significantly, leading to an increased focus on high quality production methods. In response to this growing demand, laser technology has been increasingly used for electrode notching and cutting. In addition, the advent of high-power ultrashort lasers equipped with burst mode capabilities represents a promising option for electrode cutting of LIBs.

Attosecond physics and technology

In this Perspective, we provide an overview of the field of attosecond physics and technology for which the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, and Anne L'Huillier. We look at the current state-of-the-art in attosecond timescale measurements and recent advances enabled by the light field driven technology inspired by the earlier work in the field.

MicroLED arrays—A perspective beyond displays

MicroLEDs, particularly when integrated with CMOS microelectronics, represent a significant advancement in nitride technology. While large-area, high-power LEDs for solid-state lighting have seen extensive optimization, microLEDs present unique fabrication and characterization challenges.

Temporal coupled-mode theory in nonlinear resonant photonics: From basic principles to contemporary systems with 2D materials, dispersion, loss, and gain

Temporal coupled-mode theory (CMT) is an acclaimed and widely used theoretical framework for modeling the continuous-wave response and temporal dynamics of any integrated or free-space photonic resonant structure. It was initially employed to understand how energy is coupled into and out of a cavity and how it is exchanged between different resonant modes.

Fundamentals and recent developments of free-space optical neural networks

Machine learning with artificial neural networks has recently transformed many scientific fields by introducing new data analysis and information processing techniques. Despite these advancements, efficient implementation of machine learning on conventional computers remains challenging due to speed and power constraints.

A cryogenic chamber setup for superfluid helium experiments with optical fiber and electrical access

Superfluid helium is a prototypical quantum liquid. As such, it has been a prominent platform for the study of quantum many body physics. More recently, the outstanding mechanical and optical properties of superfluid helium, such as low mechanical dissipation and low optical absorption, have positioned superfluid helium as a promising material platform in applications ranging from dark matter and gravitational wave detection to quantum computation.

A versatile high-speed x-ray microscope for sub-10 nm imaging

We have developed a next-generation scanning x-ray microscope RASMI (RApid Scanning Microscopy Instrument) for high-throughput tomographic imaging. RASMI is installed at the hard x-ray nanoprobe beamline at NSLS-II and is capable of manipulating 1D multilayer Laue lenses (MLLs) and 2D optics (both zone plates and monolithically assembled 2D MLLs).
