A survey of sound source localization with deep learning methods

This article is a survey of deep learning methods for single and multiple sound source localization, with a focus on sound source localization in indoor environments, where reverberation and diffuse noise are present. We provide an extensive topography of the neural network-based sound source localization literature in this context, organized according to the neural network architecture, the type of input features, the output strategy (classification or regression), the types of data used for model training and evaluation, and the model training strategy.

Detection of initiation of corrosion induced damage in concrete structures using nonlinear ultrasonic techniques

Structural failure caused by corrosion of the reinforcing steel in concrete structures is quite common. In most cases, corrosion cracks appear on the surface at a late stage, leaving inadequate time for taking any measures. This paper investigates the detection of corrosion damage in reinforced concrete elements by using nonlinear ultrasonic (NLU) techniques.

Benchmark problems for transcranial ultrasound simulation: Intercomparison of compressional wave models

Computational models of acoustic wave propagation are frequently used in transcranial ultrasound therapy, for example, to calculate the intracranial pressure field or to calculate phase delays to correct for skull distortions. To allow intercomparison between the different modeling tools and techniques used by the community, an international working group was convened to formulate a set of numerical benchmarks.

Offshore wind energy development: Research priorities for sound and vibration effects on fishes and aquatic invertebrates

There are substantial knowledge gaps regarding both the bioacoustics and the responses of animals to sounds associated with pre-construction, construction, and operations of offshore wind (OSW) energy development.

How the waveguide acoustic black hole works: A study of possible damping mechanisms

The acoustic black hole (ABH) effect in waveguides is studied using frequency-domain finite element simulations of a cylindrical waveguide with an embedded ABH termination composed of retarding rings. This design is adopted from an experimental study in the literature, which surprisingly showed, contrary to the structural counterpart, that the addition of damping material to the end of the waveguide does not significantly reduce the reflection coefficient any further.

Celebrating the one millionth cochlear implant

Cochlear implants have been the most successful neural prosthesis, with one million users globally. Researchers used the source-filter model and speech vocoder to design the modern multi-channel implants, allowing implantees to achieve 70%–80% correct sentence recognition in quiet, on average.

How to analyse and represent quantitative soundscape data

This study first examines the methods presented in ISO 12913 for analysing and representing soundscape data by applying them to a large existing database of soundscape assessments. The key issue identified is the inability of the standard methods to summarise the soundscape of locations and groups

The clear speech intelligibility benefit for text-to-speech voices: Effects of speaking style and visual guise

This study examined how speaking style and guise influence the intelligibility of text-to-speech (TTS) and naturally produced human voices. Results showed that TTS voices were less intelligible overall. Although using a clear speech style improved intelligibility for both human and TTS voices (using “newscaster” neural TTS), the clear speech effect was stronger for TTS voices.

Infrasound direction of arrival determination using a balloon-borne aeroseismometer

Free-floating balloons are an emerging platform for infrasound recording, but they cannot host arrays sufficiently wide for multi-sensor acoustic direction finding techniques. Because infrasound waves are longitudinal, the balloon motion in response to acoustic loading can be used to determine the signal azimuth.

Detection of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) non-song vocalizations around the Vema Seamount, southeast Atlantic Ocean

Humpback whales are a cosmopolitan, highly vocal species. Investigated here are their vocalizations recorded at the Vema Seamount (31°38′S, 08°20′E) from moored hydrophones in the austral spring of 2019. During the 11-d recording period over 600 non-song calls were detected.
