Vowel signatures in emotional interjections and nonlinguistic vocalizations expressing pain, disgust, and joy across languages

In this comparative cross-linguistic study we test whether expressive interjections (words like ouch or yay) share similar vowel signatures across the world's languages, and whether these can be traced back to nonlinguistic vocalizations (like screams and cries) expressing the same emotions of pain, disgust, and joy.

A large-scale validation study of aircraft noise modeling for airport arrivals

In the U.S., the Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) is approved to predict the impacts of aircraft noise and emissions. AEDT's critical role in regulatory compliance and evaluating the environmental impacts of aviation requires asking how accurate are its noise predictions.

Comparison of aluminum nitride thin films prepared by magnetron sputter epitaxy in nitrogen and ammonia atmosphere

Wurtzite-type aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films exhibiting high thermal conductivity, large grain size, and low surface roughness are desired for both bulk acoustic wave and surface acoustic wave resonators. In this work, we use ammonia (NH₃) assisted reactive sputter deposition of AlN to significantly improve these properties.

Optimizing pump–probe reflectivity measurements of ultrafast photoacoustics with modulated asynchronous optical sampling

Time-resolved optical pump–probe experiments enable the study of complex light–matter interactions on ultrafast timescales, provided that they reach sufficient sensitivity. For instance, with pump-induced ultrafast photoacoustics, probing the typically small changes in optical properties requires a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Dynamic measurement of gas flow using acoustic resonance tracking

The National Institute of Standards and Technology measured gas flows exiting large, unthermostated, gas-filled, pressure vessels by tracking the time-dependent pressure P(t) and resonance frequency f_N(t) of an acoustic mode N of the gas remaining in each vessel.
