Magnetoelectric Materials, Phenomena, and Devices

Submission Deadline: December 31, 2020View Collection

Voltage-control of magnetism has been considered and proven to be an efficient actuation protocol to boost energy efficiency in a widespread range of devices. This Special Topic will show the state of the art and exemplify the recent advances in the field of magnetoelectric materials and systems. Contributions will include, but are not limited to, new magneto-ionic materials with enhanced performance (higher rates, larger voltage-driven magnetic effects), new procedures to boost electric surface charge accumulation in magnetic thin films and materials with high surface/volume ratio, strain-mediated and charge-mediated coupling in multiferroic heterostructures, single-phase multiferroics and new types of applications and devices based on these materials. In the context of potential applications, the area of information and communication technologies (from spintronics and memory devices to neuromorphic computing) will be of special interest. The Special Topic brings together scholars from different scientific disciplines (including physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, etc.) representing all aspects of magneto-electric materials, from fundamentals to applications.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Magneto-ionic materials: oxides and beyond
  • Boosting magneto-ionic rates
  • Magneto-ionic memories
  • Neuromorphic computing based on magneto-ionics
  • Multiferroic materials and devices
  • Magneto-ionic control of non-collinear magnetic structures
  • Magneto-ionics: magnetic design by ion irradiation techniques
  • Multiferroics from a theoretical perspective
  • Magneto-ionics: electrochemical aspects
