Advances in laser material processing for applications in nanoscience and engineering

Submission Deadline: February 28, 2027Contribute to this Special Topic

This special issue aims to publish the latest developments, discoveries and study of new materials, methods and technological advances in laser processing of materials. The applications fields involved include material science, chemistry, physics, nanotechnology, catalysis, energy, biology and medicine. Studies related to fundamental, theoretical and experimental developments on material synthesis and processing by laser ablation, including laser surface texturing, pulsed laser deposition (PLD), laser induced periodic surface structuring (LIPSS), laser processing in liquid (LAL, LIL) and laser based additive manufacturing processes with a special focus on the laser-material interaction and process upscale to meet the current industrial demands. The topics are not only focused on the synthesis process but include the advances in the design of the resulting structures, such as metamaterials, nanostructured surfaces, crystal engineering, 1D and 2D materials, as well as the applications of the laser processed materials in energy storage, photo-electrochemistry, photodetection, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), catalysis, bactericidal materials, and generally functional materials. Contents of this issue include but are not limited to laser ablation/irradiation of bulk, micro and nanomaterials; laser induced defects in 1D and 2D materials including crystals, laser based additive manufacturing, LIPSS, and the synthesis of functional nanostructures with plasmonic, magnetic, bactericidal or catalytic response. The symposium covers the applications of the laser structured and additive manufactured materials such as the fabrication of SERS sensors, photodetectors, materials for photo-electrochemistry, nanostructured surfaces and devices for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, food safety, renewable energies, catalysis, and inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches for the integration of laser ablation/irradiation with analytical techniques such as in-situ and in-operando electrochemistry, fuel cells, batteries, etc.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Laser Ablation/Irradiation of Bulk, Thin Films, Micro- and Nanomaterials
  • Laser Ablation: Fundamental Studies and Theoretical Developments, Including Ultrafast and Nonlinear Properties of the Laser Process and Materials
  • Laser Surface Texturing and Crystal Engineering
  • Laser-Based Additive Manufacturing Processes
  • Advances in Laser Ablation Instrumentation and Methodologies to Scale Up Synthesis and Material Processing
  • Laser-Produced Photodetectors, Photoelectrochemistry, and Photovoltaic Devices
  • SERS, Optical, and Optoelectronic Sensors Fabricated by Laser
