Materials, Methods, and Applications of Color Centers with Accessible Spin

Submission Deadline: April 30, 2021View Collection

Advanced quantum systems are emerging as powerful drivers of scientific research and technologies enabling a wide range of applications. Color centers with accessible spins in solid-state materials are naturally relevant in this context due to their potential for transformative quantum sensing, communications, network, and computing technologies. Many of the excellent features of color centers derive from their quantum-mechanical nature, including excellent quantum coherence, controllable entanglement, and functionality over a broad temperature range. There is intense activity to develop and understand the color center physics and new applications. The success of these efforts relies on advances in theory, materials, device engineering, and the development of sensitive metrology tools. To summarize the recent progresses in this field, this Special Topic covers materials, methods, and applications of color centers with accessible spin in a broad range of quantum science and technologies.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Sensing applications
  • Spin-based quantum devices
  • Protocols for enhanced performance (such as dynamical decoupling)
  • Materials growth and processing for color centers
  • Hybrid integration
  • New quantum application proposals
  • Method development
  • Hybrid system using spin-based color centers
  • Theoretical development supporting applications

Submission and acceptance criteria:

Manuscripts considered for publication in Journal of Applied Physics are expected to meet the journal’s standard of acceptance: to report on original and timely results that significantly advance understanding in contemporary applied physics. Material that is exclusively review in nature is not considered for publication. Manuscripts submitted for consideration in this Special Topic must meet the same criteria and will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process. The Editorial Team of Journal of Applied Physics will issue final decisions on the submitted manuscripts. Manuscripts will publish immediately upon acceptance.
