Quantum Sensing

Submission Deadline: November 30, 2024

This special topic collection of articles is dedicated to quantum sensing. In an era marked by explosive advancements in sensing and imaging technology, achieved through the innovation of classical sensors and computer algorithms, there remain certain sensing limitations that continue to challenge classical systems. Harnessing the principles of quantum mechanics, such as coherence, squeezing and entanglement, quantum sensors can overcome the limitations of classical sensing in specific applications. Quantum sensors have broad applications, ranging from fundamental physics inquiries like the detection of dark energy and matter, as well as the observation of gravitational waves, to everyday uses, such as atomic clocks for navigation, magnetometers, and biosensors. The ongoing and future research in this field holds the potential to revolutionize the foundations of precision sensing, leading to the revelation of previously inaccessible physical laws and enabling portable quantum sensors that advance various domains. This special issue focuses on quantum sensors built on a variety of platforms, including quantum optical states, defects in solids, superconducting circuits, laser-cooled atoms, neutron beams, and quantum optomechanical systems with applications in fields, including but not limited to timekeeping, navigation, field sensing, imaging, biology, radar, global parameter estimation, and high-energy physics.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Quantum Metrology in Fundamental Physics,
  • Applied Quantum Sensing
  • Engineering Quantum Sensors
