Quantum Light

Submission Deadline: April 30, 2025

As quantum technologies mature and diversify, source of quantum light are increasingly becoming key components in many of these technologies. Because of performance and integration, sources of quantum light from solid-state nanostructures are now important solutions. This Special Topics edition of Applied Physics Reviews will focus on the properties of quantum light from solid-state nanostructures. This curated collections of latest results from leading research groups worldwide will summarize the properties of quantum light sources from various platforms and offer overall comparisons.

This issue will cover deterministic single-photon sources, entangled photon states, and matter-photon entanglement. There is a diverse group of solid-state systems that have demonstrated the emission of such states of light. These include but are not limited to semiconductor quantum dots, molecules, defect complexes in 2D and 3D hosts. Due to their solid-state nature, they can often be inserted in high-performance optical cavities enhancing important properties, such as brightness and indistinguishability, and degree of entanglement.

The fundamental study of quantum light continues to be a fruitful research program. As well, the study of solid-state nanostructures continues to develop in ever-branching different directions. This Special Topic edition combines the two fields, providing an up-to-date evaluation of significant contributions. This Special Topic edition of Applied Physics Reviews will be led by Profs. Glenn Solomon of the University of Adelaide, and Igor Aharonovich of the University of Technology, Sydney.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • General comparison of quantum light sources, including all types of sources.
  • Quantum-dot based quantum light, including optical cavity coupling, and discrete-state optical characterization.
  • Point-defects and complexes in semiconductors, including those in Si, diamond, BN.
  • Single molecule-based quantum light
  • Two-dimensional solid-state systems
  • Quantum control and quantum measurement in solid-state systems
  • Applications in quantum information

Guest Editors

Glenn Solomon, University of Adelaide

Igor Aharonovich, University of Technology, Sydney

About the Journal

Applied Physics Reviews (APR) features articles on important and current topics in experimental or theoretical research in applied physics or applications of physics to other branches of science and engineering. APR publishes the following types of articles:

  • Original Research: An article reporting on an important and novel research study of high quality and general interest to the applied physics community.
  • Reviews: This type of article can either be an authoritative, comprehensive review of established areas of applied physics, or a short timely review of recent advances in established fields or new and emerging areas of applied physics.
