Optical Computing Systems

Submission Deadline: May 31, 2025Contribute to this Special Topic

Analog computing via optics has energetically resurfaced recently thanks to new advances in nanophotonics, computational capabilities, and optical design technologies. This resurgence is driven by the need for alternative platforms to tackle resource-intensive task in many fields, including artificial intelligence, telecommunication, sensing, computer vision, and imaging.

This Special Topic aims at showcasing the latest advances and prospects of analog and special-purpose computing enabled by free-space optical systems based on engineered surfaces and the use of artificial intelligence in the design of advanced metadevices and integrated systems.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Diffractive photonic and optical neural networks and diffractive processors
  • All-optical data classification and object detection
  • Optical processing of spatial information and computational imaging
  • Statistical interference with deep optics and photonics
  • Optical processing of spectral, polarization, and temporal information
  • All-optical operations and transformations
  • Hybrid systems exploiting synergy of diffractive optical processors and electronic computing
  • Integrated systems
  • New techniques and applications of machine learning for metadevices
  • Applications for metadevices & integrated systems
  • Training methods for photonic and optical neural networks
  • Photonic computing with metamaterials and metasurfaces
  • Neuromorphic Photonic Devices and Architectures
  • Programmed diffraction
