Next-Generation Photonic Sensors and Platforms

Submission Deadline: November 30, 2026Contribute to this Special Topic

Decorative ImageThis collection will showcase advances at the convergence of fiber photonics, plasmonics, and emerging photonic architectures, highlighting the rapid evolution of photonic science and engineering. We welcome contributions spanning a broad range of topics, including but not limited to distributed and point fiber-optic sensing, fiber Bragg grating technologies, plasmonic structures for sensing and signal manipulation, metamaterials and metasurfaces, non-Hermitian and topological photonics, integrated photonic devices and platforms, and AI-driven and inverse-design approaches for photonic sensors. Contributions leveraging machine learning, optimization algorithms, and data-driven methods to enable novel sensor functionalities and enhanced performance are particularly encouraged.

Submissions addressing innovative fabrication techniques, new theoretical frameworks, and experimental demonstrations are strongly encouraged. Cross-disciplinary applications, including structural health monitoring, biomedical diagnostics and sensing, telecommunications, and quantum photonics are especially welcome. This Special Topic aims to capture the progression of photonic technologies across scales, from macroscale fiber-based systems to nanoscale photonic structures, while fostering dialogue between communities working in guided-wave optics, nano-optics, and emerging photonic phenomena.

Original research articles, perspectives, comprehensive review papers, and roadmaps are all welcome for consideration.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Distributed and point fiber-optic sensing (Brillouin, Rayleigh, Raman)
  • Fiber sensors and interrogation techniques
  • AI-enabled and inverse-designed photonic sensors
  • Plasmonic structures for sensing and signal manipulation
  • Metamaterials and metasurface for wavefront and polarization control
  • Non-Hermitian and topological photonic systems
  • Integrated photonic waveguides and on-chip platforms
  • Cross-disciplinary applications including structural health monitoring and biomedical sensing
  • Wearable Photonics
