Classical Ordinal Patterns and Beyond

This Focus Issue is dedicated to the theory and applications of ordinal patterns. Inspired by the presentations and discussions at the Workshop COPAB25 —held on campus of the University of Twente in April 2025 — it welcomes contributions that advance our understanding of ordinal patterns from a variety of perspectives, including theoretical developments, methodological innovations, and applied studies.

While particular emphasis is placed on work at the intersection of dynamical systems, complex systems, and statistical time series analysis, submissions from other areas where ordinal patterns play a central role are equally encouraged. Interdisciplinary approaches that bridge rigorous theory with real-world applications in fields such as physics, biology, and beyond are especially welcome, as well.
