Charged-Particle Transport in High Energy Density Plasmas

Submission Deadline: February 20, 2024

This Special Topic invites updates on theoretical, computational, and experimental approaches to determining ionic and electronic transport properties in high energy density plasmas. These properties, which include diffusivity, electrical and thermal conductivities, stopping powers, and electron-ion coupling, are critical for accurate modeling of high-energy-density (HED) and inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments. Work that contextualizes sensitivities and uncertainties of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations to these transport properties is also invited. This collection will include a review of the second charged-particle transport workshop, which was held in California in July 2023.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Ionic transport: diffusivity and viscosity
  • Electronic transport: electrical and thermal conductivities
  • Electron-ion equilibration
  • Charged-particle stopping powers
  • Hydrodynamic model sensitivities to charged-particle transport
  • Uncertainty quantification related to charged-particle transport
  • Experimental measurements of charged-particle transport in high energy density plasma

Submission Instructions

Manuscripts considered for publication in the Physics of Plasmas are expected to meet the journal’s standard of acceptance: to report on original and timely results that significantly advance understanding in observational, computational, and theoretical plasma physics. Manuscripts submitted for consideration in this Special Topic must meet the same criteria and will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process. The Editorial Team of the Physics of Plasmas will issue final decisions on the submitted manuscripts. Manuscripts will publish in an issue after acceptance and collected together with a Preface prepared by the Guest Editors to highlight this important and timely area. For more information on the journal’s editorial policies, please click here.

Manuscripts must be submitted through the Physics of Plasmas’ online submission system (PXP). Please select the Special Topic “Charged-Particle Transport in High Energy Density Plasmas” to submit your manuscript for consideration in this Special Topic.
