Towards Chip-Scale Photonic Computing Architecture, Devices and Materials

Submission Deadline: April 30, 2024

There has been an ever-growing race in massively growing amounts of data with the capacity of computing units. Photonic computing extending to optical neural networks (ONNs), optical AI and machine learning provide an appealing solution owing to the inherent parallelism in optical signal processing through wavelength de/multiplexing. Photonic computing has rapid signal processing speed and consumes no power or very little power in signal routing. In recent years, with the establishment of Si, SiN and InP photonic foundries, photonic systems scaling on high yield commercial platforms has become a reality. This special topic issue of JAP highlights recent advancement in chip-scale photonic computing systems, photonic computing architecture, photonic AI accelerators, photonic activation function, novel devices and materials for optical signal processing.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Novel devices and structures for photonic computing and optical signal processing
  • Novel materials for photonic computing. Examples are nonlinear absorbing materials for on-chip activation function
  • Chip scale optical neural network realization
  • Chip scale AI accelerators
  • Novel Integrated photonics architectures and non von Neumann computing architecture
  • Novel algorithms and circuit co-design for application specific photonics computing implementation
  • Analog photonics computing and nonlinear photonics computing
  • Integrated photonics sensors for edge computing
  • Novel photonic memory devices and optical storage elements

Submission and acceptance criteria:

Manuscripts considered for publication in Journal of Applied Physics are expected to meet the journal’s standard of acceptance: to report on original and timely results that significantly advance understanding in contemporary applied physics. Material that is exclusively review in nature is not considered for publication. Manuscripts submitted for consideration in this Special Topic must meet the same criteria and will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process. The Editorial Team of Journal of Applied Physics will issue final decisions on the submitted manuscripts. Manuscripts will publish immediately upon acceptance.

For more information on the journal’s editorial policies, please click here.

Manuscripts must be submitted through the online submission system (PXP) of Journal of Applied Physics. Please select the Special Topic “Towards Chip-Scale Photonic Computing Architecture, Devices and Materials” to submit your manuscript for consideration in this Special Topic.
