In situ and Operando Characterization

Submission Deadline: November 10, 2022

Direct insights into physico-chemical processes that underlie the performance of functional materials require characterization under relevant real-world conditions while the processes occur. Measurements of model systems under readily accessible ambient conditions are often not directly relevant to the functioning system, motivating the development of analytical instruments that enable in situ and operando measurements. Particular challenges include methods that can accommodate extremes in temperature, pressure, and chemical environments while maintaining their probing capability. This Special Issue will focus on the advances and remaining challenges in developing in situ and operando experimental approaches that can provide fundamental insights into and accelerate the development of novel and improved functional materials.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • In situ and operando spectroscopy and microscopy
  • Extreme environments
  • Temporal, spatial and chemical resolution
