Depletion Forces and Asakura-Oosawa Theory

Submission Deadline: April 30, 2021View Collection

The seminal paper on depletion forces by Sho Asakura and Fumio Oosawa appeared as a 500 word Letter to the Editor in JCP in 19541. An excellent Perspective article on the topic, by Kurt Binder, Peter Virnau and Antonia Statt, was published in JCP in 2014 on the 60th anniversary of the original work2. JCP has played a critical role in the birth, development, and broad application of work based on this “fifth force of nature.” The proposed Special Issue will include papers exploring experimental and theoretical developments as well as diverse applications of depletion forces in a variety of fields including (bio)macromolecules, colloids, polymers, gels, and glasses.

2 J. Chem. Phys. 141, 140901 (2014); DOI: 10.1063/1.4896943

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Colloids
  • Polymers
  • Microemulsions
  • Gels
  • (Bio)macromolecules
  • Self-assembly
  • Glasses
  • Interactions
  • Phase separations
  • Polymer nanocomposites
  • Polymer-particle suspensions
  • Kinetic arrest
  • Biological soft matter
