Programmable Liquid Crystal Elastomers

Submission Deadline: January 15, 2021View Collection

This Special Topic focuses on liquid crystal elastomers where programmed macromolecular orientation leads to programmed properties, including but not limited to shape change, soft-elastic mechanical behavior, and optical properties. We invite authors to submit original research articles that develop new actuation mechanisms, investigate structure-property-processing relationships of liquid crystal elastomers, or utilize these relationships for new technical advances. In addition to original research articles, this Special Topic will contain invited tutorials from experts in the field that emphasize unique or emerging techniques for processing and characterizing liquid crystal elastomers as well as invited perspectives that highlight recent advances in liquid crystal elastomers.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Directed self-assembly
  • Additive manufacturing or 3D printing
  • Microfabrication
  • Formulation strategies
  • Dynamic covalent chemistry
  • Mechanical orientation
  • Composites
  • Analytical or computational modeling
  • Mechanics-guided design
  • Photomechanical or electromechanical materials
  • Mechanical characterization
  • Metamaterials
  • 2D or 3D molecular order
  • Multifunctional applications

Submission and acceptance criteria:

Manuscripts considered for publication in Journal of Applied Physics are expected to meet the journal’s standard of acceptance: to report on original and timely results that significantly advance understanding in contemporary applied physics. Material that is exclusively review in nature is not considered for publication. Manuscripts submitted for consideration in this Special Topic must meet the same criteria and will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process. The Editorial Team of Journal of Applied Physics will issue final decisions on the submitted manuscripts. Manuscripts will publish immediately upon acceptance.
