Mechanical Metamaterials

Submission Deadline: September 30, 2025Contribute to this Special Topic
Metamaterials enable the achievement of exotic mechanical properties. The development of theoretical, numerical, and experimental approaches has facilitated the creation of a wide range of mechanical metamaterials, from origami and kirigami to lattice materials, spanning passive to active responses and scales from nano- to macro-level. However, there is still considerable room for further development, such as the discovery of new types of metamaterials through the design of novel architectures, the exploitation of nanoscale effects, and the realization of practical applications for both existing and emerging metamaterials. This Special Topic presents recent progress in this area of development.

Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

  • Origami/kirigami engineering
  • Lattice material design and optimization
  • Negative response, such as negative Poisson’s ratio, negative thermal expansion, and negative stiffness
  • Programmable and active response
  • Strong, lightweight, and durable metamaterials
  • Multifunctional mechanical metamaterials
  • Theory and simulation
  • Advanced 3D/4D printing techniques
  • Applications
