Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
AIP Publishing believes the pursuit of knowledge is the pursuit of a better world: one where science can be generated by all, accessible to all, and beneficial to all. We are driven by the evidence — and the belief — that the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging lead to better solutions. As such, we are committed to welcoming conversations that help us understand and respond to the various perspectives of our colleagues and community.
In line with the diversity initiatives of the American Institute of Physics — and in recognition of our unique and influential position as a publisher for a large federation of scholarly societies — we have dedicated ourselves to a publishing landscape that eliminates barriers to participation and promotes inclusion and representation at every step of the process.
Science belongs to everyone. It should be practiced, published, and available to anyone who seeks it, regardless of that person’s race, sex, color, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, nationality, religion, socioeconomic standing, or physical abilities. This is the heart of AIP Publishing’s mission, and it is incumbent upon us to promote and reinforce these ideals in all our decisions and actions.
Compiled over the course of 18 months with more than three years’ worth of data on authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial boards, from the AIP Publishing and many Publishing Partner journals, the Diversity and Inclusion at AIP Publishing report provides a vital snapshot of the gender, race/ethnicity, and geographic diversity of our publishing programs — and serves as a benchmark as we continue to improve and build upon recent successes in the DEI space.
APC Waivers
Important research can be generated by anyone, anywhere, and should be made broadly accessible to everybody. In the interest of removing financial barriers to scholarly publishing, we have an expansive Article Processing Charge (APC) Waiver and Discount Policy. Waivers and discounts are automatically applied when the corresponding author is from countries classified by Research4Life and the World Bank as low- or lower-middle-income.
Author Name Change Policy
We recognize someone may change their name for any number reasons, including — to name a few — gender identity, marital status, or religious conversion. If an author wishes to change their name on previously published journal articles, AIP Publishing will update and repost those articles and redeliver the updated metadata to third-party indexing services. Our customer service, editorial, and production teams handle name changes quickly and discreetly. To learn more, see our Correcting the Scholarly Record page or view the Author Name Change Policy FAQ.
Open Access Publishing
We are deeply committed to open science, and that commitment spans our entire publication portfolio. Between our suite of Gold OA journals, our support of Author Select (which enables authors to make their paper OA in any of our titles), our many Read and Publish Agreements, and numerous other options that allow authors to make their articles publicly accessible after publication: If you’re interested in open science, we have a solution for you.
Uniting to Improve Scholarly Publishing
AIP Publishing has adopted the principles of the Coalition for Diversity & Inclusion in Scholarly Communications (C4DISC) and is an active participant in the Joint Commitment for Action on Inclusion and Diversity in Publishing, joining like-minded trade and professional organizations working to address the issues of diversity and inclusion within our industry.
