AIP Publishing is pleased to announce the winners of the 2020 APL Materials Excellence in Research Award for research into high-temperature superconductor materials, transparent field-effect transistors, and molecular beam epitaxy growth.
The award winners were selected by an external committee based on the scientific content for research that was published in APL Materials between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020. The candidates were required to be 40 years of age or younger and be the first author.
Zhong-Li Liu, from Luoyang Normal University in China, won first place for a June 2020 article, “Material informatics for layered high-TC superconductors.” He and fellow researchers built a model of high-temperature superconductors using materials informatics based on machine learning, and used the model to predict 25 new high-TC superconductor candidates, which are not known to be superconductors.
Liu will receive a $5,000 prize and a waived article processing charge for a 2022 article published in APL Materials.
Jisung Park, from Cornell University, won second place for a January 2020 article, “Fully transparent field-effect transistor with high drain current and on-off ratio.” The researchers developed a transparent, sub-micron-scale thin film transistor utilizing a lanthanum-doped BaSnO3 channel layer patterned by reactive ion etching that provides a high drain current of 0.468 mA/μm and an on-off ratio of 1.5 × 108.
Park receives a $2,500 prize and waived article processing charge for a 2022 article published in APL Materials.
Dongxue Du, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, captured third place for a December 2019 article, “High electrical conductivity in the epitaxial polar metals LaAuGe and LaPtSb.” She and the team demonstrated that single-crystal LaAuGe and LaPtSb films, grown by molecular beam epitaxy, demonstrate electrical resistivity an order of magnitude lower than previously studied oxide polar metals.
Du will get waived article processing charges for a 2022 article published in APL Materials.
All the winning papers will be highlighted on the APL Materials webpage, included in email communications to materials science researchers and shared on social media. The awards will also be announced in an email to the 2020 Virtual MRS Spring/Fall Meeting attendee list and promoted at our virtual exhibit booth.
Entries for the 2021 APL Materials Excellence in Research Award are now being accepted. Eligibility and other details are available on the APL Materials website.
