Melville, NY, June 8, 2015 – AIP Publishing, one of the world’s leading publishers in the physical sciences, today announced the launch of APL Photonics, a new open access journal for photonics research.
APL Photonics will feature high quality original research covering all areas within the field. APL Photonics’ vision is to be an authoritative, peer-reviewed, rapid publication serving the entire photonics community.
“AIP Publishing has long been the trusted home for cutting-edge photonics research through our flagship journals Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physics and The Journal of Chemical Physics,” said John Haynes, Chief Executive Officer. “We are thrilled to extend this tradition with APL Photonics. Through fair, fast, and rigorous peer review, the journal will uphold the same reputation for quality as its parent journal, Applied Physics Letters.”
“It is a particularly exciting time for the field of photonics,” noted Jason Wilde, Chief Publishing Officer. “2015 marks the International Year of Light, which pays tribute to the global significance of light-based technologies. Additionally, the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics—awarded to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano, and Shuji Nakamura for their development of blue LEDs—further illustrates the societal impact of photonics research. In line with AIP Publishing’s commitment to meeting the evolving needs of researchers, APL Photonics’ open access publishing model allows for greater visibility and compliance with growing funder mandates.”
APL Photonics will be the dedicated home for open access research directly serving the photonics community. Alongside APL Photonics, Applied Physics Letters will continue to publish photonics papers appealing to the wider interdisciplinary physics community, as will the other journals in our photonics portfolio, including: AIP Advances, APL Materials, Applied Physics Reviews, Journal of Applied Physics, The Journal of Chemical Physics, Review of Scientific Instruments, and Structural Dynamics.
The journal will be open for manuscript submissions in summer 2015. The first content is scheduled to be published in spring 2016.
Topics covered include:
- Light sources
- Imaging, detectors, and sensors
- Optoelectronic devices and components
- Novel materials and engineered structures
- Quantum optics and cryptography
- Ultrafast photonics
- Biophotonics
- Nonlinear optics
- Plasmonics
- Nanophotonics
- Exotic photonics
