At AIP Publishing, expanding access to scientific knowledge is central to our mission. In alignment with the newest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1 AA), we are strengthening how research is prepared and shared to ensure it can be understood by all readers, including those using assistive technologies.
Beginning in April 2026, authors will be required to provide alternative text (alt text) for visual elements in their articles, including figures, tables, and multimedia content. Alt text provides a concise description of visual content, making it accessible to screen readers and helping ensure research can reach the widest possible audience. By embedding accessibility into the publication process, we are reinforcing our responsibility to steward research in ways that maximize its reach, usability, and impact.
This update reflects a broader change across scholarly publishing. Our focus is on implementing it in a way that is clear, practical, and integrated into existing author workflows, so that accessible research becomes standard practice, not an added burden.
We recognize this is a new step for many authors. To support adoption, accessibility guidance is introduced early in the submission process, reinforced during revision, and confirmed at proof stage prior to publication. Built-in checks and prompts help ensure requirements are met, and articles cannot proceed to publication without completed alt text.
Accessibility is an ongoing effort. AIP Publishing will continue to evolve its platforms and guidance to support inclusive, high-quality research communication, reflecting our purpose-led commitment to ensuring research is accessible and usable by all.
