CEO John Haynes to leave AIP Publishing

  • October 11, 2019

John Haynes has announced that he will be retiring from his role as CEO of AIP Publishing. John joined the American Institute of Physics as Vice President, Publishing. He became AIP Publishing’s inaugural CEO in February 2013 when the company was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of AIP, and has been responsible ever since for delivering the vision, mission, and strategy of the publishing company.

In a communication to the AIP Publishing Board, John said:

“I joined AIP in February 2009 with a strong personal commitment to promote society publishing and transform AIP into a leading scientific publishing house. It has been a privilege to serve as AIP Publishing’s first CEO since the company was spun off from the parent in 2013. Over the course of almost 11 years, I have been fortunate to work with talented colleagues on staff, AIP’s Board, and AIP Publishing’s Board of Managers. Thank you all for the great opportunity to serve AIP Publishing and the physical science community.

I’m very proud of everything we have achieved together, whether it’s launching new titles, building out a new publishing office, focusing on growth and learning, continuing the professionalization of our products and services, and maintaining a steady focus on strategic engagement with key stakeholders including publishing partners, journal editors and library customers.

I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned and couldn’t be more excited about the company’s future.”

With John’s leadership, AIP Publishing has seen tremendous growth in performance and impact. Year-on-year, the enterprise has generated crucial revenues for its parent, AIP, in support of its work to advance, promote, and serve the physical sciences for the benefit of humanity, and is well placed to ensure continuing effective delivery of its mission as a society publisher.

Chair of the AIP and AIP Publishing Boards, Professor David Helfand, said:

“John has been a tremendous asset to the Institute and its Member Societies for more than a decade.  He has overseen substantial growth and revitalization of AIP Publishing, and the company is now in a very strong position as a direct consequence of his considerable efforts.  On behalf of the Board of Managers and of AIP, I thank him for his invaluable leadership.  It has been a great personal pleasure for me to work closely with him during my time as Board Chair. He has built a fantastic team in Melville and has taken great pride in their development.  We will sorely miss him.  He has decided it is time for him to explore other opportunities, and I wish him every success in the future.”

The AIP Publishing Board of Managers is executing a plan to hire a new CEO, and the recruitment process has begun. John will continue to lead the organization until a worthy successor is found.
