Melville, NY, December 14, 2015 – AIP Publishing, one of the world’s leading publishers in the physical sciences, today announces the appointment of Richard C. Pardo, PhD, Argonne National Laboratory, as the new Editor-in-Chief of Review of Scientific Instruments (RSI) as of January 1, 2016. RSI is devoted to novel advancements in scientific instrumentation, apparatuses, measurement techniques, and related mathematical analysis.
“I am extremely honored to have been selected as the next Editor-in-Chief of this highly regarded publication. My seventeen-year tenure as an Associate Editor has provided me with valuable insights into the journal and an insider view of the direction in which RSI is currently heading. I am excited about the prospect of leading the journal to even higher standards of excellence. I look forward to working with the editorial board and AIP Publishing to deepen RSI’s historical strengths while attracting submission of the most important and exciting developments across multiple disciplines from across the globe,” commented Dr. Pardo.
Having had a successful tenure at Argonne National Laboratory since 1979, Dr. Pardo is currently Chief of ATLAS (Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System) Operations and a Senior Physicist, where he is responsible for maintaining and operating the world’s first linear accelerator that uses RF superconducting technology for ion acceleration. This is currently the nation’s leading low-energy, stable beam user facility.
Dr. Pardo was trained formally in the field of nuclear physics (Ph.D. in Nuclear Astrophysics from the University of Texas, Austin) with an emphasis on nuclear astrophysics; nuclear physics relevant to element creation in the universe and the life cycle of stars. He has worked primarily in the field of accelerator physics as a practicing scientist and equipment specialist. His focus is on low-energy nuclear physics, development of RF superconducting technology, beam optics, and ion sources.
Over the last few years, Dr. Pardo’s research efforts have shifted to using accelerators in novel accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS) applications for astrophysics and earth sciences. Those efforts include the first detection and use of 81Kr as a chronometer and the determination of the half-life of 146Sm for use as a cosmochronometer.
In addition to acting as chair and member of several conference organizing committees, Dr. Pardo regularly edits the biannual Proceedings of the International Conferences on Ion Sources. He has published more than 400 articles in accelerator physics and related fields.
“After making significant contributions to RSI as associate editor we are delighted to have Dr. Pardo step into the role of Editor-in-Chief. We also wish to recognize the distinguished service of Dr. Albert T. Macrander,” noted John Haynes, CEO of AIP Publishing. “Dr. Macrander has served as the Editor-in-Chief of RSI for 16 years, overseeing its growth in submissions and expansion of its international authorship and readership.”
